Beautiful new primitive art....and for a great cause!

So a few weeks ago we were cutting through Maplewood and discovered it was their Holiday Walk for all the shops. It looked like some live music was going on in the Folk Music School- our kind of peeps. We went to Roots first and looked at some primitive antiques- had a laughing attack and needed to exit the store before we were asked to leave.

We wandered across the street to this studio that I always noticed, but never knew what it was....we walk in and it is an art opening with tons of primitive, raw outsider type of art. Big Daddy and I just stared at each other and wondered if this was some sort of joke....as we walk through we cannot believe all the amazing paintings on display. I located the bearded guy who seems to be in charge and ask him about it - he tells me that they are the Turner Center for the Arts and they have a drop in art studio for disabled adults. For $5 they can come in and create art. They are open Monday- Thursday from 10am-3pm. They split the proceeds 50/50 - half going to the artist and half going to the Center. They have about four exhibits a year and the money raised is how the Center stays open. And they do get some additional funding from Bridges (http://www.bridgescss.com/).

All the artwork ranged from $25-100 per piece. We bought three paintings. Two were done by Rosie Millheiser and they look fantastic in my dining room and the frozen pond is by Michael Boyer. Rosie is a fantastic artist- we were drawn to both her pieces and they were hung on two different walls. We didn't realize they were the same artist til later. Michael's piece was the first one we selected and it was so appropriate for the upcoming winter season. It looks terrific in our living area.

If you are interested in checking the studio out, their website is http://www.turnercenterforthearts.org/andand
they are located at 3109 Sutton Blvd. They have been there since 2006.
